Florence: the reinassance between beauty and legends

The most important city for reinasssance art, Tuscany food and florentines people

Florence is unique. As a hotbed of inspired cultural development under Medici rule, Florence led the Italian Renaissance, the result being an unrivalled legacy of artistic and architectural masterpieces - treasures by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto and Michelangelo.

The city's famous galleries, including the Uffizi and Accademia, draw art lovers from all over the world so it's worth pre-booking a visit. Snow in Florence Beauty is by no means a thing of the past in Florence, however, a simple stroll through the streets can be a rollercoaster of thrills as the eye moves from a stunning renaissance palazzo to the ultimate chic of a designer shop window.

Style even seems to be impressed on the Florentines themselves since birth, which makes people-watching from a pavement café all the more enjoyable.
One of the city's best-loved sights, the Ponte Vecchio, is the most central of a series of bridges spanning the River Arno. The higgledy-piggledy buildings on the bridge once housed butcher's shops whereas nowadays they're home to some of the city's best goldsmiths.Baptister of Florence

Cross the bridge to reach the magnificent Pitti Palace and Boboli gardens and while you're over here explore the quieter district of the Oltrarno. On the same side of the river, walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the iconic panorama over the rooftops of Florence and a birds-eye view of the perfect dome of the cathedral by Brunelleschi.
From here it's well worth the short uphill stroll to the sublime Romanesque church of San Miniato al Monte.

Old Palace FlorenceOnce back down at the foot of the hill make time to linger at the villagey San Niccolò district where a cluster of traditional hostelries and designer bars offer welcome refreshment.

Much-loved by foodies, Florentine cuisine is characterised by simple dishes made with quality ingredients. Huge Florentine (t-bone) steaks and delicious hearty soups, such as ribollita (made with vegetables and bread) are among the mainstays, while the local olive oil is full of flavour and complements any dish to perfection.

On the wine front, the local Chianti is a permanent option at wine-bars and restaurants while the Tuscany region's other prestigious vintages such as Brunello di Montalcino and the Supertuscans are a costly but enjoyable treat.
A perfect way to end a meal is with a handful of almond flavour cantucci biscuits dunked into a glass of exquisite vin santo dessert wine.

Another favourite local delicacy that should be tried to be believed is a panino with lampredotto (tripe).

The stalls with huge pans of steaming tripe that are found at a number of locations around the city are often overlooked by visitors but they're much frequented by the locals.

Look out for the one at Mercato Nuovo and while you're here don't forget to stroke the shiny nose of the bronze wild boar as you drop your coin into the fountain – it's meant to bring good luck and guarantee a return to this wonderful city!
